About New Voices

New Voices is a non-profit organization which runs media education programs which promote personal and community development.

New Voices has been producing community photography programs and service learning opportunities for high school students and adults since 2009 beginning in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA and is now focused on programs in Playa Sámara, Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

New Voices photography programs range from school based digital photo classes to commercial photography classes for intermediate and advanced photographers.

New Voices service or experiential learning programs engage students and their community partners, individuals from diverse socio-economic, racial and national backgrounds in learning the basics of photography who work together to develop their unique points of view through the lens of the camera. In the course of over 75 artistic collaborations, high school students have established personal relationships with hundreds of community partners, supporting them as they build a new sense of confidence and dignity through the process of developing and sharing their creative work. At the same time they are serving the needs of individuals in the community, students become ambassadors for change by sharing their discoveries and personal opinions about complex issues, their “new voices”, with school, family and broader communities.

New Voices director David Rosenthal leads each photo program and has been creating community photo projects and teaching photo classes to students from primary school age through adults in schools and universities since 2001.
